What a gas economizer does
A gas economizer is a heat-exchanger fitted into a boiler's flue (exhaust) path. It captures heat that would otherwise be lost up the chimney and uses it to pre-heat the incoming feedwater or combustion air, so the burner needs less fuel to reach the same operating temperature. It's a well-established, physically distinct piece of equipment — separate from the burner itself.
What magnetic fuel conditioning does instead
Magnetic fuel conditioning — the technology behind CSSB's Magnatech system — takes a completely different approach. Rather than recovering heat after combustion, it changes the fuel itself before it burns. Neodymium (rare-earth) magnets are clamped onto the outside of the existing fuel pipework. As oil, gas or LPG flows through the magnetic field, clustered hydrocarbon molecules are broken apart and reoriented, so more of them react with oxygen at the burner — producing a hotter, more complete burn from the same volume of fuel.
An economizer recovers wasted heat after combustion. Magnetic fuel conditioning improves the quality of the burn before combustion. They intervene at different points in the same process — which is why some sites use both.
Installation and disruption
A gas economizer requires modifying the boiler's flue and often the feedwater system — a more involved retrofit that typically needs downtime to install. Magnatech units are clamped externally onto existing fuel pipework, with no cutting, welding or downtime, and no ongoing maintenance or moving parts.
The evidence behind the savings
Magnatech holds Environmental Technology Verification (ETV) certification. A 56-day independently verified trial at a Pfizer manufacturing plant confirmed a 10.2% fuel reduction, and a University of Sheffield study measured a 10% reduction in NOx emissions from the more complete burn. CSSB's own portfolio data shows a minimum 3–8% fuel saving, year after year, with a typical payback of 6–12 months.
If your boiler or furnace doesn't already have an economizer and a flue retrofit isn't practical or affordable right now, magnetic fuel conditioning delivers a comparable class of fuel saving with a same-day install and zero downtime.
